Missed Ed Sheeran? We know you did. And he probably knows it too, which is why the balladeer came back at the best possible time to sing the sorrows of 2020 away with his new song, “Afterglow.”

“Hey guys. Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you. It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy ! Have a safe and happy festive break and New Year’s. Back to dad land for me now, ciao x,” Sheeran shared on his Instagram with the video of him performing the song.

The reason we haven’t heard any new music from Sheeran for more than a year is because he took a hiatus last August 2019. After two straight years of touring, the artist announced that he would be taking a break from music and social media for “probably 18 months” so he could “have something to write about.” That’s a long time, but props to him for keeping his word.

Prior to “Afterglow” and before disappearing off the face of the Earth, Sheeran’s last release was the extremely stacked “No. 6 Collaborations Project,” which saw him performing alongside Cardi B, Justin Bieber, Khalid, Bruno Mars, Travis Scott, and Chance the Rapper.

That the song is stunning is a testament to the wonders of taking time off for self-care. You do you, Ed.
