Liam Payne opens up about his mental health and alcoholism during his One Direction days. He guested on Steven Barlett’s podcast, The Diary of a CEO, and admitted many of his days were wasted with pills and booze. The British singer/songwriter goes on saying he even had “moments of suicidal ideation.”
The Height of One Direction
One Direction was formed in 2010 and was one of the biggest boybands until 2015. Payne was just 16 when he was grouped with the other four members, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik. The now 27-year-old recalls the uphill battle during their rise to fame and realized how unhealthy he looked in some of his past photos.
When the 1D boys weren’t doing shows and interviews, they would be left alone to their own devices in the room. “What’s in a room? A minibar. So, at a certain point I thought, I’m just going to have a party-for-one and that seemed to carry on for many years of my life. It was wild but it was the only way you could get the frustration out,” he explains. He refers to pictures of him on a boat where he was bloated due to his unhealthy habits and calls it his “pills and booze” face.
Payne thinks leaving the band was the best option for him. Because he kickstarted his music career at an early age, he lacks basic life skills like paying for car insurance since there was always someone running his errands for him. “I still feel like a child in so many ways. There is no link between money and happiness. It is a myth. Money is the ability to relax on certain things.” One of the things keeping him occupied these days is being a father to his 4-year-old son, Bear.
Liam Payne admits to being one of those people who resorted to alcohol while being isolated at home. He also just recently ended his 10-month engagement with Maya Henry. The former One Direction member is aware of his issues and says he’s working on himself before he gets back out there.
