In recent weeks, the cultural divide between Gen Z’s (people born between 1997 to 2005) and millennials (those born between 1981 and 1996) has been making waves on social media, with the younger generation deeming millennial staples such as skinny jeans and the side hair part as uncool.

To add to this ongoing disparity, young Gen Z critics are attempting to ‘cancel’ one of the biggest figures in pop culture since the 1990s, Marshall Mathers, who is commonly known as Eminem. According to Esquire Magazine, the #canceleminem movement started on the popular social media platform, TikTok. In February, a user who has since been removed from the app, uploaded a short clip from the 2010 Eminem and Rihanna song, “Love the Way You Lie,” with a caption saying, “Yesssss lets cancel him.”

The initial post has then gone viral, with Zoomers arguing how that the song glorified domestic violence against women. However, millennials then clapped back at the Gen Zers, pointing out that the rapper has always been controversial, and he’s always branded himself as an outsider. As one Twitter user pointed, “more powerful people” have tried and failed to cancel the hip-hop icon, including two US presidents.

In classic Eminem fashion, the rapper released an animated video for his song Tone Deaf, which featured photos of disgraced figures like Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein. In the song, Eminem, who has always been one to take the bait, pushed back against cancel culture, and alleging that “they won’t stop until they cancel me.”

Eminem has been in a lot of public feuds throughout the years, and he has remained relatively unscathed. Instead of being deemed socially unacceptable, the #cancelmovement seems to be working for the rapper, with his fans relentlessly defending on the net. Clearly, Slim Shady isn’t going anywhere.
