Taylor Swift Gets Songwriting Credit On Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour” Album

When Olivia Rodrigo‘s debut album “Sour” came out, fans were quick to notice the big names listed under the credits section for one of her songs.

If you’ve already streamed “Sour” and noticed that “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” sounds familiar, it’s because the song interpolates one of Taylor Swift‘s own songs, “New Year’s Day.” Since this was composed by Taylor and Jack Antonoff, they were included in the songwriting credits for the fourth song on Olivia’s first album.

Although Swifties and Livies were hoping for a duet, what really happened was an interpolation–not a sample–of Taylor’s closing track on “Reputation.”

Interpolating is the process of re-recording the melody of another song, and would require the go signal from its composers. For “New Year’s Day,” it’s Taylor and Jack. Meanwhile, sampling is reusing the same exact recording used in another song, and would require permission from the legal owner of the master recording. (In this case, it’s not Taylor.)

Aside from giving Taylor and Jack songwriting credits on her song, Olivia also thanked them in her album’s booklet. “Thank you to Taylor and Jack Antonoff for graciously letting me use their masterpiece ‘New Years Day.’ The songs they’ve crafted together are my favorite songs of all time,” she said.
