For those who have never heard of Griff, she’s a 20-year-old singer and songwriter who took the 2021 Brit Award for Rising Star. Her full name is actually Sarah Faith Griffiths, and she’s out to make cool, interesting music. Get to know the artist behind the single Black Hole and why she’s worth a listen.
Born and raised in a small village called Kings Langley, there wasn’t much to do and so making music became her pastime. Both her parents are immigrants, and she comes from a Jamaican-Chinese background, which inevitably made her stand out. Soul and gospel music was what she grew up around, but it was Taylor Swift’s Fearless that got her into pop.
Road to Stardom
Before anyone has heard of her music on stations like BBC Radio 1, she taught herself the basics of music production on her brother’s MacBook. “I was drawn to it probably just because I was able to record my own vocals and lay down harmonies and stuff,” she told i-D. With the help of YouTube tutorials, she was able to hone her bedroom pop sound.
When MTV UK asked who inspired her to start a career in music, she says no one person did. “Probably a good mix of parents funding music lessons, my friends and team’s encouragement, my own delusion.” It wasn’t until after her A-Levels that she did music full-time, releasing her first EP, Mirror Talks, under Warner Music. She has since done a Disney Christmas advert and received praise from T-Swift herself for her cover of Exile.
Griff might find it a bit cringe to talk about her musical life but hopes people like her music. While fans wait for her upcoming mixtape, One Food in Front of the Other, they can listen to her discography that includes songs with Zedd, HONNE, and Maisie Peters.
