New trailer for the fourth season of ‘Stranger Things’ reveals release date

Looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer for the ragtag team from Hawkins to return.

On Friday, Netflix released a very brief and very scant 30-second teaser trailer for Stranger Things Season 4. While short, it gave us the most generous glimpse we’ve had at footage from the forthcoming season, while also confirming what many of us already braced for: that we won’t see the series return until 2022.

The trailer seems to pick up from May’s minute-long teaser clip, starting with the same voice saying “Eleven, are you listening?” as the camera closes in on a door labeled “Eleven.” Along with split-second snapshots flashing in rapid succession, there’s also the voice of Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven that warns the watcher that “something’s coming” and “it is almost here.”

And — spoiler alert! — David Harbour’s character, Sheriff Jim Hopper, who was presumed dead by the ending of the previous season, also appears in the trailer in an instant as bald, unhinged, and wielding a flamethrower to boot.

Despite a delayed arrival, as is the case for every production hampered by the pandemic, it might be worth the wait. Harbour himself revealed that the show’s fourth season isn’t only his most-liked season, but also the biggest one yet.

“It’s bigger, that’s the first thing. In scope, in scale, even in the idea that we’re not in Hawkins anymore,” Harbour teased to Collider. “We’re introducing new stuff, but we’re also tightening and wrapping up in a certain direction to make it have a clear, clean specific, and definite ending at some point, which I can’t really talk about.”

A horror-drama series from the minds of the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things was officially renewed for a fourth season as early as September 2019 and began shooting by early 2020. While filming seems to have finally wrapped up, we owe the long wait to extensive post-production editing, which gives us the stunning visual effects that the show is known for.

Aside from Brown and Harbour, also returning for the fourth season are Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Cara Buono, Brett Gelman, and Matthew Modine.
