With the depth and variety of tabletop card games in the market today, it’s about time we got to have one that highlighted Philippine folklore.

We’re talking about Lagim, a survival card game based on various Filipino mythological creatures and folklore narratives. Crafted by Fictionminds, the game officially launched last December 10, and it’s piqued the eye and minds of tabletop players since then. To wit, according to a CNN Life feature, around 400 units of the game have already been pre-ordered!

The choice for the word “crafted” was willful, as the game isn’t just a test of tactical skills and strategy, it’s also a display of precise artistry and craftsmanship.

“We want it to be a functional art piece, in the sense that even outside of playing the game, you can still see the artistic value in its meticulous design and craftsmanship; that it can be a personal collection, creative gift or a family heirloom, and that it is a one-of-a-kind vessel and keeper of the Filipino artistic expression,” says Augusto Ayo, the founder and art director of Fictionminds, and lead concept and character artist for the game.

And true enough, it’s as Filipino as a game can be. Peep at the magnificent gothic-style drawings of the bungisngismambabarang, and the timeless tikbalang.

But enough being enthralled — how do you play it? Since it’s set way before civilization settled during the early 17th century, your primary goal is protecting your Baryo from mystical creatures, or from other players. Players are given Soul Coins which serve as their life points, and Baryo cards which serve as their primary mode of attack or defense. Run out of Soul Coins, and you’re out of the game.

You can play Lagim with a friend or as a group of up to six people. You can refer to this video to know more about the basics of the game:

Want to get a crack at this gorgeous game? You can buy the basic game set off of Lagim’s website for PhP3,850. You can also tweak your group’s gameplay by buying additional Baryo Soul Coins and Dark Soul Coins for PhP1,100 and maybe a Lagim coin pouch too for PhP300. Or, if you want to get your hands on the game for the beauty of it, they also sell Lagim card sleeves for PhP350 and a special edition Lagim Sigbin card, made with premium matte coating and printed with gold inscriptions for PhP650.
