Her nephew Lawrence Sonora Cruz was first to acknowledge what happened. Not long after, Senator Grace Poe released an official statement that read, in part:

“With great sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved Jesusa Sonora Poe, whom many of you know as Susan Roces.”

Showbiz denizens’ grief flooded social media. Some commented on Sen. Poe’s post, while others penned tributes of their own on their respective accounts.

“Deepest condolences,” veteran showbiz talent manager G.R. Rodis wrote under Poe’s post. “I cannot believe it. Our eating barkada is one less beautiful soul.”

Coco Martin, star of FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, wrote a heartfelt tribute to his “Lola Flora”:

Rest in peace, Lola Flora. Salamat sa magagandang alaala,” wrote hip-hop group Smugglaz. They worked with Roces on FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.Mami-miss namin yung frozen fruits mo lalo na pag mainit sa set.”

Showbiz legends speak up

Angel Locsin shared how she was too shy to ask Roces for a photo when they met on the set of Mano Po 2. She got up the courage to do so when they did a show together but lost the photo when her laptop crashed.

Still, she considers it an honor to have shared moments with the queen she respects and admires very much. “Ang mga payo at paguusap namin ay aking panghahawakan.” You can read her full post here.

Judy Ann Santos also expressed her sadness about Roces’ passing.

The Diamond Star’s message was more concise but no less heartfelt. “Mama Susan, mahal na mahal kita,” Maricel Soriano wrote under a photo of herself and Roces on Instagram.

“I will hold you in my heart. We will miss you. Maraming salamat sa pagmamahal Tita Susan. Our love and prayers,” Lorna Tolentino wrote on Instagram.

“Rest in peace, Ate Susan,” Vilma Santos-Recto wrote on her Facebook page. “Maraming salamat. We will miss you. We love you.”
