Squid Game has become a popular theme for parties after the Netflix Original series trended. People dress up as the characters, try the honeycomb challenge, and ultimately have fun doing so. However, the internet found it distasteful for Chrissy Teigen and husband John Legend to host games like these for their rich friends.
Epic or Epic Fail?
“Where do I even begin!! what an absolutely epic night. my dream came true of watching my friends fight to the death! dunk tank, musical chairs, hide and seek followed by a very riveting final game of pin the tail on the donkey,” the TV personality captioned her Instagram post. The comment section was filled with mixed reactions. Some users affirmed how epic the party was; others were disgusted that she missed the point of the show.
Why did they receive backlash?
Netizens chastised Teigen for throwing such an extravagant party because the show is a harsh reflection on wealth and capitalism. The consensus was that it was tone-deaf, cringe, and a lack of self-awareness. “I love this…But I’m also getting rich white men watching the glass bridge episode vibes,” one user said.
A Display of Exorbitant Wealth
According to the New York Post, the event was organized by party planners, Wife of the Party. It was held in their LA home and decorated just like the show’s see, complete with a maze staircase, bunk beds, and large piggy banks stuffed with cash. The prizes included a flight to Napa and dinner for two in the three-Michelin star restaurant, The French Laundry.
Guests came dressed in green tracksuits like the contestants in the game, while waiters dressed like the guards in red jumpsuits and marked masks. Teigen’s cosplayed the terrorizing doll in the “Red Light, Green Light” episode and Legend donned a suit similar to the VIPs. Among friends who attended were Shay Mitchell and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
