At the height of the #FreeBritney movement, many celebrities have spoken up about the singer’s rights to her career and body. Among them was her old pal and fellow artist, Christina Aguilera.
Britney Spears, who has been in a controversial 13-year long conservatorship under her father, delivered an emotional speech in front of a Los Angeles court last week. It was the first time she spoke about the issue.
“I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m OK and I’m happy. It’s a lie,” she said. “I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed.”
She also went on to detail the lengths that her father and management would go to in order to keep control over her life. This included forcing her to get an IUD. “I have an IUD in my body right now that won’t let me have a baby and my conservators won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out,” she admitted.
Spears’ 23-minute speech caused a flood of messages on social media that showed love and support for the star, as well as clamor for justice. Aguilera, who has known Spears since their Mickey Mouse Club days, was one of these voices.
In a lengthy Twitter thread, Aguilera blasted the conservatorship and called it “unacceptable.”
“To be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support by those ‘close’ to you is the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable,” she wrote. “The harmful mental and emotional damage this can take on a human spirit is nothing to be taken lightly.”
She went on to assert that women should have rights to their own reproductive systems, privacy, and space.
Aguilera ended her message by assuring fans and readers that Spears is deserving of “all of the freedom possible” to live her best life, and that she also deserved genuine “love and support.”
