Met Gala attendees don glamorous looks on the red carpet to match the theme of the event year after year. But for some of them, things don’t always go so smoothly–there are attendees who’ve endured injuries, wardrobe malfunction, and awkward encounters.
Hailey Bieber, who’s been to the Met Gala six times already, said that she thinks the event is “cursed” for her. And the reason why? She broke her foot (and the same one at that!) two years in a row during the Met Gala season.
“The first time I ever went to the Met, the morning after, I twisted my ankle and broke my foot. It was a whole thing. I was 18, so this was a long time ago,” she said during her first guesting on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“But then the year after, 365 days to the day, because it was midnight of the Met Gala, I broke the same foot. But, the bone next to the one I broke the year before.”
“So I had this whole thing in my head where I was like, ‘The night of the Met Gala or the 24 hours within the Met Gala [is] cursed for me.’ It happened the two times, and it hasn’t happened since,” she said while knocking on the wooden table by her side.
Hailey also shared in a September 2021 vlog that her Met Gala 2019 experience was not so smooth either–her painful hairstyle actually gave her a bald spot.
“I had a full bald spot in the back of my head right here from that Met Ball ponytail. It was worth it, it’s fine. I got it injected and it grew back,” she said.
This year, Hailey and her husband Justin Bieber attended the Met Gala together for the first time. Hailey wore a black Yves Saint Laurent gown, while Justin wore a black suit from Drew House, a clothing line he co-founded with Ryan Good in 2018.
