From yorme to supremo, Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno‘ Domagoso is set to step into the shoes of Andres Bonifacio in a historical biopic helmed by award-winning filmmaker Erik Matti.

The director disclosed the actor-turned-politician’s role during an exclusive interview with CNN Philippines’ The Final Word last Friday, a day before the Philippines’ Independence Day. In it, he explained that Moreno was the meaningful choice to play the revolutionary given their parallels: both hailed from Tondo, both were theater actors before being public servants, and both bore love for the City of Manila.

The film, tentatively titled “May Pag-Asa,” the pseudonym used by Bonifacio, will focus on the fall of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonizers, a divisive demise that is the doing of Filipinos themselves.

Explaining the drive behind the film, Matti said that while there have been dozens of historical films led by the Supremo, there is still a story to be told that focuses on the revolution’s downfall by his hands.

“I think it’s crucial because Bonifacio marks the failure of a revolt against the Spaniards and we wanted to dissect that failure on why we could not unite as a country and win over the country back from its oppressor,” Matti explained.

He continued: “Upon looking at it, I think the divisiveness that we are having right now in the country is really what made us think that the Bonifacio movie which also was rife with divisiveness during that time they wanted to win over the Spaniards, I think those issues during that time make the whole film relevant to us nowadays.”

Responding to questions about whether the period piece might propel Moreno’s possible 2022 electoral campaign bid, Matti said that they “just want to do a movie” and that he is “there for him if he runs for higher office.”

The historical biopic is scheduled to start filming in the next month, with Matti aiming for a theatrical release for the movie.
