Lance Bass shares his thoughts on ‘coming out’ of the closet

It’s been 15 years since NSYNC boy band member Lance Bass broke millions of teenage girls’ hearts all over the world by revealing that he was gay. Since then, he’s been living his best life, married to his spouse Michael Turchin since 2014.

Needless to say, Bass knows what it’s like to be terrified of coming out of the closet. Bass shared in The Ben & Ashley I. Almost Famous Podcast that, “90% of my fans were women, and they all thought I was straight. I made my money off women and singing about love and using that market. So me coming out, it was scary… cause now everyone is gonna see me as a liar.”

He explained his thoughts about revealing his homosexuality in line with the current Colton Underwood issue. As per The New York Times, the ‘Bachelor’ star and former football player  came out as gay in an interview with Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America.”

As per Bass, Underwood should expect a lot of backlash after his coming out reveal. “This gay community is very diverse, but we can also be very fickle,” Bass explained. “He’s definitely gonna get a lot of backlash from the community at first. Not the majority, but there is a small percentage of the community that’s just gonna not like the fact that he came out this way, that he’s monetizing the experience. They don’t think he deserves this attention and one of those reasons is, and this is what I experienced when I came out… when you first come out, most people have no clue about the LGBT community.”

Regardless of your stand on Underwood’s big reveal, one should take into consideration that Bass came out of the closet in a different era. He definitely knows what it’s like to face the backlash of embracing his truest self.
