Lost in All the Royal Drama? Check Out This Quick Refresher for All the Tea

The royal family is not immune to family drama. In fact, in the course of a couple decades, they’ve had their fare share of very public feuds. From the Charles and Diana debacle of the 90s to 2020’s notorious “Megxit”, the tabloids have had much content to feed on.

But if you’re like us and you don’t necessarily live in the UK but want to know about all the drama, you’ll need a little refresher to keep up with all the happenings.

Here’s a timeline of the royal family drama we’ve got to witness in most recent years.

December 2018 — William “ignores” Meghan at a family function

At this point, much of 2018 was spent with Meghan trying to assimilate into the royal family and get along with royal in-laws William and Kate. While the foursome (Harry, Meghan, Kate, and William) reportedly did get along well in the beginning, there had been rumors that a secret feud had been stirring between the two Duchesses and maybe even the two brothers.

Evidence of this tension surfaced in a video taken where it seemed that William “ignored” Meghan when she tried to talk with him.

March 2019 — Rumors of an affair surface between William and Rose Hanbury

Around this time, the rumor mill was exploding with news of an affair between William and Kate’s best friend, former model Rose Hanbury. The two besties had a “falling out”, and many were quick to assume that it was due to a secret relationship between the model and the Prince.

While there had been no official confirmation of the affair, it seems that Kate and William had already cut ties with Hanbury and her husband.

October 2019 — Harry admits “rift” between him and William

It’s a small admission, but it’s enough to confirm speculation that things between the brothers were not okay. When asked about his brother during ITV’s documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Harry admitted that “stuff happens” and that as brothers, they also had “good days” and “bad days”.

The tension between the two never seemed to let up as the rest of the year passed.

November 2019 — Prince Andrew interviews with BBC about Jeffrey Epstein

It’s interesting to note how miniscule of an impact this news made in Britain. There has been direct evidence tying Prince Andrew, the Queen’s second son, to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. In the BBC interview, however, the royal said that he did not regret his relationship with Epstein, claiming that he had been given many “useful opportunities” because of him.

The Palace noticeably kept hush-hush about Prince Andrew’s involvement in the issue and let the news carefully fade into the background.

January 2020 — Harry and Meghan officially step back from royal duties

In a shocking move, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their decision to “step back” from royal life and split their time between North America and the UK. Some reports claimed that the news took the Queen by surprise and that she was not given a “heads up” before the announcement. The couple has since denied the rumors.

They then spent the rest of the year laying low in North America, while more news of bad blood between brothers Harry and William surface.

February 2021 — Palace staff accuse Meghan of “bullying”

Fast forward to 2021, where there are now accusations of Meghan driving out Palace aides. The rumors prompted a number of celebrities to defend Meghan and reprimand the press for their incessant attacks on the expecting mother. The Palace issued a rare comment on the issue, saying that they were going to “investigate” the matter.

After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back on its senior royal duties, more accusations were thrown towards Meghan.
