Aside from the virus, love was in the air as well this 2020. Though they came with less flair, the unprecedented number of celebrity proposals this year was enough to make us believe that love knows no pandemic.
We don’t know about you, but it feels to us like a lot more celebrities popped the question this year than any other despite the pandemic. Let’s look back at all the high-profile engagements that got all of social media swooning this year!
Technically, Alex and Mikee got engaged during last year’s Christmas season, but she only announced it on her birthday last January 16, so this one still counts towards this year! It was during their vacation in Hong Kong last December 2019 when Mikee got down on one knee to ask Alex the question.
With the help of loyal accomplices and some glittering golden balloons that spelled out “Will U Marry Me?” in a restaurant in Makati, chef Perry Choi surprised Kris Bernal during his birthday celebration last February 6. The two had been dating for three years and met back when Kris was starting her burger business, “Meat Kris.”
Nothing defines a power couple quite like Indian-Filipino basketball player Von Pessumal and Filipino-German model and Miss World Philippines 2017 Laura Lehmann. The two got engaged last May 3, with Pessumal capturing the event on his Instagram with a photo captioned, “lockdowned for life.”
It was subtle but not any less sweet — Kapamilya actress Ritz Azul and boyfriend Allan Guwi got engaged at a farm in Lipa, Batangas last June. Guwi, who is Azul’s first and last boyfriend, had planned to propose during a planned trip to Switzerland but had to hold it off due to the pandemic.
Kapuso actor Mark Herras’ engagement to actress and Miss World Philippines 2014 finalist Nicole Donesa last June was only the first of two huge revelations. They followed it up with another news in September that they are set to become parents too, naming their future child “Corky.” Sweet!
Last September, TV host and personality KaladKaren Davila took to Instagram to announce her engagement with her long-time British boyfriend, Luke Wrightson, whom she’s been with for over eight years. The moment quietly took place at the balcony in their home, the video of which had KaladKaren’s closest friends — Toni Gonzaga, Andi Eigenmann, and MImiyuuuh — shaking in kilig. #LoveWins!
Perhaps the perfect 11.11 deal for singer Morissette Amon was getting engaged to her boyfriend Dave Lamar, whom she first met nine years ago, atop a building rooftop during a “breathtaking sunset” last December 21.
Looks like Batangas is the best place to pop the question, as ABS-CBN Star Magic’s Melissa Ricks got engaged to partner Michael Macatangay in the same province last August 30. The spot, however, meant something special for Ricks as the two first met in Jesus the Anointed One Church in Rosario, Batangas.
GMA Actor Rocco Nacino also popped the question to his girlfriend of three years and volleyball superstar Melissa Gohing last November 20 while overlooking a stunning sunset at the famous Hinulugang Taktak in Antipolo, Rizal. In true pandemic fashion, their friends and family got to witness the moment through a Zoom conference call.
When we first heard the news, we couldn’t believe that Trina Legaspi, the girl we adorably called “Hopia” during her Goin’ Bulilit days before it went off the air was finally engaged. Before her boyfriend finally asked her to marry him last November 22, the two had apparently been together for six years. How time flies!
“A new celebration of God’s intention” is how celebrity Empress Schuck describes the moment when long-time partner Vino Guingona proposed to her last September 28. The event would thus become twice as sweet, as it was also their daughter Athalia’s fifth birthday that day.
What turned people’s heads towards this particular proposal wasn’t Mikki Eduardo popping the question to Bettina Carlos last December 2, but his asking the hand of their daughter Gummy, whom he asked permission “to be her father and to raise her up to the fear and knowledge of the Lord.” Gummy said “yes,” of course!
In what appeared to be the most talked-about proposal of the year, actor Luis Manzano is finally engaged to his equally high-profile actress-slash-girlfriend Jessy Mendiola, with the couple announcing their engagement in Amanpulo last December 12. Fate permitting, the two powered through their relationship’s rough patches last summer to finally bring their four-year relationship to the next level.
Another picturesque proposal of 2020 was Andi Eigenmann and Philmar Alipayo’s engagement, whose stunning underwater snapshots left netizens smitten. It has been a good year for the couple, as the surf-loving duo also announced last September that they are expecting their second child.
The perfect Christmas gift came in the form of a proposal as Glaiza de Castro proudly showed off her ring while announcing her engagement with Irish boyfriend, David Rainey, on Christmas Eve.
In a surprise Instagram post that snuck up on everyone, GMA star and vlogger Roxanne Barcelo announced that not only did she get engaged this year, but she also got married too!
“He asked me for the first time a few months after quarantine. Pero since naka-lockdown pa noon, all we knew was we were going to get married before the year ends,” she shared in her vlog titled “Hear Me Out” last Christmas Eve. While she’s yet to reveal who her groom was, netizens are just happy for her nice surprise.
To add to the list, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Lana Del Rey, Gwen Stefani, and former One Direction member Liam Payne all got engaged this year too. Oh well, you know what to say: sana all.
