OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder calls Asia his favorite place

Many Western artists professed their love for countries in Asia – including the Philippines – as being some of their favorite places in the world. But it comes as no surprise as Asians are some of the loudest fans in the world. Yep, Filipinos included.

And now, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic joins the hundreds of artists who have named Asia as a special place to visit – especially for tours.

Speaking to members of the press from across the Southeast Asian region, Tedder opened up about why it took the band five years before releasing a new album.

The OneRepublic frontman revealed he almost wanted to quit after getting fried from being on the road to promote the band’s last album.

“I think there’s only one song in this album that was written during any previous tour. I’m always writing the next album on tour. “Oh My My” – by the time that album came out – I was already completely fried. I almost thought I was done with the band, to be honest,” he said.

In 2016, 2017, the promotion tour schedule that we did for “Oh My My” was so destroying. I was on the road for nine months. I was on the road from May 1st to December 22nd, I remember very well of, 2016. By October, I’d seen my family maybe four days out of four, five months, and I still had three months to go. I was so done,” he added.

He went on to recall the moment he told his manager about quitting after ten years of working non-stop.

“I remember telling my manager ‘I don’t care what happens. I can’t promote any more songs.’ Like by the time we got to kids, which was the second single, I was already done. And I didn’t have left anything of me. Like “Wherever I Go” was shot in Korea, in Los Angeles. And one of my favorite videos I have done,” he said.

He continued: “But I just didn’t have it in me. I’ve been going non-stop for ten years. Well, I’ve been going from 2007 to 2017 non-stop. And so I walked away in January of ’17 and the band was like ‘what’s gonna happen to us?’”

While OneRepublic went on to go on tour over the next three years, he said he no longer knew what to do at that time.

He said: “And we did some Asia tours, actually. The only real tours we did in a three-year period (2017, 2018, and 2019). We did one American tour and we did two Asian tours. And I didn’t have it in me to do anything else, you know?”

He then shared how he fell in love with Asia and how it eventually became not just his, but the band’s favorite place in the world as well.

“Asia has become our favorite place in the world to tour by far. We love Europe, we love Australia and America. Not singling out other countries, but Asia – we’ve just fallen in love with Asia over the last five, six years so tremendously because it’s so different and so unique. Also, it’s my favorite food. So, let’s do it. Let’s figure out a way to get to Asia,” he said.

Although a lot of fans thought he was not making any music at all in the last five years, Tedder revealed he was actually busy creating music for other artists.

“In the beginning of 2019, I had done an album for the Jonas Brothers, wrote “Sucker” which went on to become a huge hit for them. And that kind of got me re-energized. I was doing Miley Cyrus’ album, Sam Smith, a bunch of different artists. And that got me back in the saddle with an artist. They were like ‘What are you doing with OneRepublic? Like why are you not doing more music? Are you crazy?’. And so, you know, I can honestly thank all those artists that I worked with for making me want to do an album again,” he shared.

Not only was the 42-year-old artist able to work with other artists, but he was also able to spend more time with his family as it allowed him to take a break from spending time on the road.

“And I had enough time off and enough time with my family and not being home and touring that I wanted to tour again and I had something to say and I wanted to go back out there and make music again,” he shared.

Meanwhile, Tedder said OneRepublic’s latest album “Human” is the start of the second chapter of the band.

“So, I see this next nine or ten years as the second chapter of this band. I always thought this is a 20-year-band from day one. And I told the band in 2019, I said I’ve got another ten years in me and then COVID hit and gobbled up 18 months of it, but yeah, this is the second chapter and I’m excited to start it with this album,” he remarked.
