Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello Announce Breakup

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have officially broken up.

The pair took to Instagram to share the news, posting a matching story of white text on a black background that said, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever.”

They continued, “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

The news comes as a shock to many fans, as the couple has been spotted at recent events looking completely smitten with each other.

After having first met in 2014, the pop stars began to collaborate on a number of songs, first with “I Know What You Did Last Summer” in November 2015 and then “Señorita” in 2019. The latter climbed to No. 1 on the Hot 100 charts and also won an American Music Award for collaboration of the year and a Grammy nomination for best pop duo/group performance.

Shortly after “Señorita,” the rumored lovebirds were spotted holding hands in West Hollywood. They confirmed their relationship in September that year, becoming infamously known for their PDA.

In 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the two even quarantined together, showing off their daily life through their Instagram posts.

On his quarantine experience with Cabello, Mendes detailed feeling a new kind of peace. “It was the first time I was quiet and I was able to be like, ‘What is happening in this world and how do I feel about it and what can I do and where does this go from here?'” he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “That was the best gift I think I’ve ever, ever been given in my whole life.”

On the other hand, Cabello shared that she learned more about love. “When you’re in a relationship with someone, it feels like they are this mirror reflecting yourself back to you–I constantly have to confront my fears, my anxieties, my insecurities, my patterns of thinking, my beliefs about life and about myself,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “It’s not as simple as it looks in pictures sometimes. sometimes, it’s messy and uncomfortable and ugly lol. But there’s nothing like the pull, the FORCE that is love.”

Though the pair is no more, their careers continue. Cabello is currently wrapping up her third studio album, Familia, which includes the lead single “Don’t Go Yet” while Mendes is set to embark on his Wonder: The World Tour in March 2022.
