Susan Roces, the Queen of Philippine Movies, passed away last night. She was 80.
Baby K. Jimenez, a close friend of Roces’, says the screen icon’s wake will take place at Heritage Park Taguig. Those who would like to pay their respects today can do so from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
There will be more time for the public to pay their respects on May 22, Sunday, and May 24, Tuesday. There will be a 12-hour window for well-wishers, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Those who can’t visit Roces may pay their respects via Zoom. The family will provide a Zoom link to the daily masses once it’s available.
Jimenez says that Roces’ interment schedule will be announced at a later date. She also reminds the public to observe health and safety protocols at the wake.
Baby and her ‘Ate Sue’
Jimenez met Roces in the 1960s when the former was playing in an all-girl combo called The Polka Dots.
“In one of our gigs, we bumped into a photographer who asked, ‘Do you want to play at a party for Susan Roces?’ We immediately said yes!” Jimenez wrote in a Facebook post last year, in honor of Roces’ 80th birthday.
In between songs, the same photographer introduced her and her bandmates to Roces. According to Jimenez, they played “Perfidia, McCoy, Torquay,” because they were so inspired. When they left the party, Roces thanked them profusely.
That was the beginning of a beautiful, enduring friendship. Jimenez went on to become part of the wedding party when Roces married Fernando Poe Junior (FPJ).
The news of Roces’ death devastated Jimenez.
