Netflix’s ‘Sandman’ Surprises Fans With A Bonus Episode

It popped up on the streaming service with no fanfare.

Two weeks have already passed since The Sandman premiered on Netflix. The bonus episode was definitely a surprise for fans. Social media platforms blew up when it dropped.

The bonus episode of ‘The Sandman’

The episode has two parts. The first, A Dream of a Thousand Cats, is an animated one. It features the voices of Neil Gaiman himself as the Crow and Tom Sturridge as Dream. Actors David Tennant and Michael Sheen of Good Omens also lent their voices to this episode.

The second part, Calliope, is a live-action episode. Mellisanthi Mahut takes the lead as the titular character. Supporting characters were played by Arthur Darvill, Kevin Harvey, and Derek Jacobi.

Why did Netflix release a bonus episode?

Neil Gaiman expressed on Twitter that he wished there were more than 10 episodes of The Sandman. Of course, fans expressed the same sentiments, as they wished for more of Dream. A few hours after the tweet, Netflix followed through and dropped the episode.

Now we don’t know if Gaiman Tweeted that for the build-up, but it reeled fans in once more. Hook, line, and sinker. It was as if the author knew the episode was coming and pulled that tweet out of his drafts for this exact occasion.

Netflix and Gaiman didn’t offer an explanation why they decided to make the 11th episode. But fans of the comic and of the series will always be thankful for more.
