Guinness World Records Declares The Weeknd As World’s Most Popular Artist

The Weeknd stands ahead of Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift in terms of Spotify streams!

Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd claims two new Guinness World Record titles on Monday, March 20, rightfully making him as the  “Most Popular Artist” in the world.

The Weeknd has automatically secured the “World’s Most Popular Artist” title, statistically far from other artists. This is after having the highest number of monthly listeners on Spotify (111.4 million monthly listeners) and the first artist to hit 100 million monthly listeners on the same platform.

In a report published by GWR, The Weekend, who is Abel Makkonen in real life, stands far from the other artists in the industry and that “no one else even comes close.”

The 33-year-old Canadian star has almost 30 million listeners ahead of Miley Cyrus, who only has 82.4 million month-on-month streams. The succeeding artists in the list are Shakira with 81.6 million; Ariana Grande with 80.6 million; and Taylor Swift with 80.2 million monthly listeners.

Over The Years: The Weeknd x Ariana Grande

The recent spike in The Weeknd’s streaming numbers came after the release of his “Die For You” remix featuring Ariana Grande. The song was originally released in 2016 as one of the tracks in the Starboy album. But it was only earlier this year that its remix version with Grande was launched to the public.

The Weeknd and Grande have already been working with each other in the past, with “Love Me Harder,” Öff the Table,” and “Save Your Tears Remix” as some of their notable collaborations.

Before The Weeknd’s “Most Popular Artist” title, Michael Jackson was left unbudging as the only male artist to have achieved such metrics.

These titles are the latest additions to The Weeknd’s GWR titles. He is also the recipient of the 2016 GRW certificates for the most streamed album on Spotify and the male artist recipient for the most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100.

Throughout the years, The Weeknd has produced a total of five studio albums: “Kiss Land” (2013), “Beauty Behind Madness” (2015), “Starboy” (2016), “After Hours” (2022), and “Dawn FM” (2022).
