American Crooner Tony Bennet Dies At 96

Tributes quickly poured in celebrating Tony Bennet’s illustrious career

Celebrated singer Tony Bennett passed away in his hometown, New York City on July 21, 2023. He was 96.

The “The Way You Look Tonight” hitmaker is known to be part of the last generation of classic American crooners.

Without revealing the cause, Tony’s publicist Sylvia Weiner announced the crooner’s demise on Twitter. Recall that Tony revealed in 2016 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was “still singing the other day at his piano,” said a message on his official Twitter account.

Tributes for Tony

Soon as news of his death surfaced tributes quickly poured in from the music, political, and acting worlds celebrating his illustrious decades and legacy in the industry. 

“Without doubt the classiest singer, man and performer you will ever see. He’s irreplaceable. I loved and adored him,” Elton John wrote on Instagram.

“For more than 70 years, Tony Bennett didn’t just sing the classics — he himself was an American classic,” President Joe Biden said in a statement, offering his and his wife Jill Biden’s condolences to loved ones and fans of the “timeless artist” who brought “joy.”

Over at Twitter, several personalities also recalled their good ‘ol days with the balladeer.

Among those who commemorated him were singers Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, and Irish rock band U2, as well as former US Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
