The upcoming anime movie is set to be written and directed by the series’ original creator Takehiko Inoue, who also broke the news last January on Twitter.
Apart from these, everything else about the much-awaited film is being kept under wraps for now.
First serialized as a manga in Shueisha’s Weekly ShÅnen Jump in 1990, Slam Dunk run lasted for six years, selling over 120 million volumes in Japan in the process and spawning a hugely successful anime that aired from 1993 to 1996 as well as four animated feature films.
Acknowledged as a key player in pushing the sports manga genre to the fore, Inoue’s Slam Dunk series centers around the story of Hanamichi Sakuragi, a delinquent high school student who joins the school basketball team, Shohoku, in an attempt to get closer to his crush, Haruko Akagi. Apprehensive at first, Sakuragi would later join his teammates Takenori Akagi, Kaede Rukawa, Ryota Miyagi, and Hisashi Mitsui in their goal to be the best basketball team in Japan.
