Wes Anderson’s Most Aesthetic Films

Famed Hollywood director Wes Anderson is known for his whimsical films built out of simple but complex storylines and charming characters. Though, his movies are most famous for their visual uniqueness; they are often doused with vibrant colors and personality — a style that is truly Anderson’s.

Have a look at this list of Wes Anderson films to gain a deeper appreciation of his one-of-a-kind cinematic art.

Anderson is known for incorporating a specific “vintage chic” style to his films, an aspect that makes it easy to recognize what an Anderson film distinctly looks like. The Royal Tenenbaums was arguably the film that helped him establish this unique style. The comedy-drama is painted with 70s-eseque props and design, bringing on visuals that enforce the emotions and feelings being expressed in the scenes.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

While The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou may not be the most successful film under Anderson’s belt, it still achieved a certain level of artistic finesse with its precise set design and overall superb production value. Set mostly on the ship Belafonte, audiences can expect a classic visual treasure and beautifully contrasted colors in each scene.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Extremely intricate and detailed, Fantastic Mr. Fox was Anderson’s first attempt at animation, and it was a good one. Most scenes are imbued with autumn oranges and yellows, showing off a dazzling setting that reflects the quite “fantastic” world of Mr. Fox. Anderson’s use of real materials (real shrubs, stones, and fox fur) also creates a sense of realism you can’t get in any other stop-motion film.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Dive into one of Anderson’s more nostalgia-evoking films, Moonrise Kingdom. The film functions like a hazy, aesthetically pleasing dream, complete with blue-grey New England coastlines and a dollhouse-like East Coast home. As a movie that explores childhood romance and youth, Moonrise Kingdom will have you yearning for days past.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

The Grand Budapest Hotel is widely considered to be a visual masterpiece; the varying color palette (from candy pink to standout red) and theatrical ambience present in each scene makes the film wholly satisfying to the eye. As a film about a quirky concierge and lobby boy duo, The Grand Budapest Hotel will entertain on all levels.
