What Made Paulo Avelino Say Yes To His Role In PH Adaptation Of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?”

Paulo on accepting the role: “If it was offered to me and it wasn’t Kim, I’d probably have second thoughts”

Paulo Avelino reveals that his decision to accept the lead character of Vice Chairman in the Philippine remake of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?” was driven by his respect and admiration for Kim Chiu

Paulo and Kim will be sharing another screen as they reunite for the local version of the South Korean hit series “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?” Their pairing was reprised after the successful run of their series “Linlang.”

During the grand media conference of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?” on March 9, 2024, Paulo and Kim were asked what was one unusual thing that they did for love—be it platonic or romantic.

For Paulo, accepting the role is just one uncommon thing he did for Kim—since he respects the actress so much for the work and effort she put into “Linlang.”

He says, “Siguro ito. Itong ‘Secretary Kim,’ dahil sa pagmamahal ko bilang katrabaho ka at sa lahat ng binigay mo sa ‘Linlang.’ So pang-bawi sa ’yo. I’m here in ‘Secretary Kim’ to give back.

“I think, if it was offered to me and it wasn’t Kim, I’d probably have second thoughts,” he adds.

Just as much, Paulo also elaborated that he took on the role out of respect for Deo Endrinal—Dreamscape Entertainment’s head who passed away on February 3, 2024

For Kim’s part, she also reflected on the question, saying that she has done so many things for the sake of love.

As she puts it, “Siguro, marami ka namang magagawang unusual kapag nagmahal ka. Parang hindi na yun unusual sa’yo. Parang normal na yun pag nandun yung love.”

Paulo and Kim were also asked about how they feel about their well-received tandem, KimPau. In answering such, Paulo has lightly tapped on his early days in ABS-CBN and how he dreamed of working with the actress someday.

He shares, “Actually, when I was new in ABS, I always wanted to work with Kim. But I wasn’t given the opportunity until the project we did last year.”

More than Kim’s A-list status and her bubbly personality, Paulo says that there’s more to that that enticed him.

“Not just because she’s a star and she’s so bubbly, but after working with her, maybe one of the qualities that I would say is, I like working with people who work fast—who work fast and know what they’re doing.

Yan, si Kim ganun. Kumbaga mabilis siyang kumilos. Alam niya yung script. Alam niya yung gagawin. Walang nagiging problema.”

Elaborating further, Paulo has also brought up Kim’s relatable energy on the set, saying that the actress knows how to “set the tone.”

So makikita mo, pag malungkot si Kim, hindi naman malungkot lahat pero alam mong malumanay yung set. Pag high energy si Kim, yung tone niya—siya talaga ang nagse-set ng tone ng set. Lahat ng tao energized din.

The Philippine adaptation of “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?” is the latest offering of one of ABS-CBN’s content-providing units—Dreamscape Entertainment.
