Enrique Gil on his latest movie project: “Sabi ko, ‘Pu*ha, I need to do this!”
After a three-year hiatus, Enrique Gil is back in doing movies!
Enrique Gil’s comeback movie is titled “I Am Not Big Bird,” which is a co-production between ABS-CBN Films’ Black Sheep and Kroma Entertainment’s ANIMA Studios, as well as Enrique Gil’s own production company.
The film was first announced during ANIMA Studios’ recent anniversary celebration, where Enrique and his co-stars shared the good news.
“I Am Not A Big Bird” depicts a story set in the 2000s, where a group of Filipino friends went to Bangkok for a vacation. But the supposed happy trip becomes chaotic when one of them, played by Enrique, gets unwanted attention after people believed that he is a famous Thai porn star named Big Bird, as they look alike.
The movie is far from Enrique’s usual movies, which usually center on family or romance. It also marks his first comedy movie.
During the Q&A, FreebieMNL asked Enrique what made him accept the project.
He shares, “I’m also a fan of comedy movies. My dad is a comedian, he’s a magician, lagi siyang nagka-clown and he also used to tell me, ‘Okay, pagod ka sa trabaho.’ He always makes sure na nagpapatawa siya. Sabi niya, ‘Laughter, really, is the best medicine.’
“So, that stuck to me and I haven’t done any comedy films ever. So, for my comeback, I don’t want to do something na nagawa ko na.
“I want to do something different and more than anything, I just want to have a good time, I just want them to be happy, to laugh sa lahat ng stress sa buhay, simple lang.”
Enrique also expressed his excitement to work with comedians in the film such as Pepe Herrera, Red Ollero, and Nikko Natividad.
He says of this, “It just makes everything better. It just excites me to start filming and sana matapos na ito para mapanood na ng lahat.”
Enrique Gil on choosing projects
During the Q&A, Enrique also emphasized that he is now choosing the projects he will do.
He says, “Now, I’m really choosing what I want to do and hindi ko pa nagawa, para when I look back when I’m old, mapapanood ko na, yes, I was able to do something I wanted to do.”
But admittedly, there was a shock factor when Enrique was first offered the project because of the title.
Moviegoers must also expect some daring scenes given the project’s nature.
He narrates, “Well, of course, talagang napaisip ako na sa title pa lang, ‘Big Bird,’ sabi ko, ‘Pu*ha, I need to do this!’
“But, of course, from reading the script, sabi ko, ‘Tama ba itong gagawin ko?'”
However, the apprehensions made Enrique want to do the project even more.
“But also, that concern made me want to do it more, so, yung concerns ko and reservations also pushed me to do it.”
More than anything, Enrique is just excited to go back to work.
He declares, “It just feels good to be back. Akala ko, hindi ko na mami-miss, e, pero siyempre, na-miss ko. I just want to have a good time.”
