Your Favorite Modern Pop Songs Reimagined as 80s Hits

We’ve seen the phrase “I was born at the wrong time” way too many times under the comments section of older music videos–and we totally get it! We may also have a lot of bops in recent times, but music from the 70s and the 80s were really something else.

People have become so creative that we could finally hear what it would be like if our favorite modern pop songs were made decades (and not just years) ago. Listen to these versions to find out how YouTube channels like TRONICBOX, Bronze, and exile transformed pop hits from the noughties and the 10s into 80s songs:

1. Firework by Katy Perry

“Firework”‘s original version may be a Fourth of July music staple, but this version sounds like a song we’d use in an aerobics class or hear in an 80s home workout video!

2. Closer by The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey

The reimagined 80s version of “Closer” sounds like a love song couples would have slow danced to at proms, parties, or even weddings.

3. Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye feat. Kimbra

To make things even more confusing, this one has a “music video” made from various clips of Gotye and Kimbra’s performances. We’d almost believe it’s 40 years old instead of 10!

4. Rain on Me by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande

We could totally imagine this instrumental version of the song being used as background music in our favorite 80s films.

5. That’s What I Like by Bruno Mars

Some of Bruno’s songs already sound like they could have been hits from the 80s–”Versace on the Floor” and “Treasure” come to mind right away.

Listen to this “That’s What I Like” 80s version, complete with an old karaoke-style video for that extra retro vibe!
