How to Make a Rental Feel Like Home

Get that homey feel without putting your deposit at risk

When you’re renting an apartment, it can be a struggle to make it your own. Either you’re stuck with a furnished unit that doesn’t represent who you are or an unfurnished one.

Regardless of your predicament, you must be itching to redecorate. After all, it’s part of what makes moving into a new place so exciting. But while a total overhaul of your rental may be tempting, you need to figure out how to go about it properly.

Not sure where to start? Here are five ways you can make your rental feel like home.

Redo Your Walls

The things you can do to a rental are usually limited due to your lease agreement with your landlord. For example, you may not be allowed to repaint walls–in which case removable wallpaper is a good alternative to paint. You can also put up framed art or posters instead. Whatever you decide to do, know that adding a personal touch to your rental’s walls will make a big difference to its look and feel like home. Just avoid damaging the walls in the process of redecorating!

Get Good Lighting

Simply changing the lighting fixtures can work wonders. The right lighting can make any place look homey and beautiful fixtures can double as decor. If you have lots of windows, don’t block them with furniture to fill your new place with natural light. If your rental isn’t very big, you can use mirrors to create the illusion of space.

Get Creative With Storage

When you first move in, your place might be littered with boxes of your stuff. Instead of shoving them in random cabinets or empty rooms, now’s the time to get creative with storage. Invest in containers hidden under beds and tables or inside closets.

Bring Out Your Personal Items

While keeping your stuff in storage is key to keeping your space clean, bringing out a few personal items will make your rental look lived in. Place your favorite books and trinkets on different surfaces to add character to your apartment. If you have a favorite vintage find, now’s your chance to show it off.

Adopt Some Plants

Whether you put a potted plant on your windowsill or elsewhere in your apartment, the addition of greenery will make it feel cozy and look inviting. Just make sure to get a plant that will thrive in your apartment. Not everyone is lucky to have a constant source of direct sunlight.
