Potato Cakes Might Be the Next Quarantine Food Trend

Tiktok has brought to us many food trends last year like the dalgona coffee, pancake cereal, and cloud bread. Recently, the craze has been about a potato cake. No, this isn’t one of those memes about cakes disguised as everyday objects that made the internet have trust issues. It isn’t a latke either if that’s what you’re thinking.

While a cake is traditionally made from a mixture of flour, eggs, and sugar, we’ll let this one slide because it was beautifully executed. We’re not exaggerating when we say Tiktok user Zachary Hayes (a.k.a. @zhthot) made it entirely out of potatoes. For those wondering how he did it, here’s how.

Step 1: Have potatoes, and lots of them. Use sliced and roasted potatoes as the base, and layer it with mashed potatoes. Repeat this process until you get some height, then leave it to chill overnight.

Step 2: Once it has set, arrange the outside of the cake with hash browns and layer with more mashed potatoes on top. To finish it off, garnish it with Tater Tots and potato wedges and bake it in the oven. Talk about an overload!

In an interview with Today, Zachary says he did it out of boredom, which is something we could all relate to after being quarantined for so long. He goes on to explain the thought process behind the viral video. He wanted to get creative with the bunch of potatoes he had and happened to also like making cakes.

Since going viral, there has been a mixed reaction from the viewers. Some we’re turned off about the amount of starch and lack of seasoning, but Zach assures that it tasted good. Suggestions on improving his creation were to add bacon, sour cream, cheese, or gravy.

And yes, he ate it all himself. He wanted a potato cake for his birthday so that’s exactly what he got.  Will you be trying this yourself?
