This Starbucks ‘Whipped Cream’ Is Made From Lentils

Who says lentils can only be used in soups, salads, and other savory dishes? Starbucks proves you can also enjoy it with your coffee.

The American coffeehouse chain is currently testing a new topping option that’s plant-based and dairy-free–and it’s made from lentils!

“Building on Starbucks sustainability commitment, the company’s goal is to expand plant-based choices as an environmentally friendly menu contributes to our goal to be a resource positive company,” a Starbucks spokesperson shared to VegNews.

For now, this vegan “whipped cream” is only available at two Starbucks locations in the US: at 1350 156th Ave. NE in Bellevue, Washington, and at another undisclosed location in Seattle.

Last year, Starbucks UK also launched a vegan “whipped cream” option to go with their Vegan Pumpkin Spice Latte. According to Vegan Food & Living, the dairy-free topping from Alpro has an “indulgent, silky texture and light hints of vanilla.” What differentiates the whipped topping from the US and UK, though, is that the latter uses “cream” made from soy instead of lentils.

Meanwhile, Starbucks Philippines introduced plant-based versions of their Classic Lasagna, BBQ Mochi Bun, and Mince Roll earlier this year but they were available for a limited time only.

The company also introduced their new “Plant-based Positivity” line which includes Oatmilk Honey Frappuccino, Oatmilk Honey Golden Monkey Tea Latte, and Oatmilk Honey Latte this month. Vegan-friendly Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies and Pot Pies are now available in local Starbucks branches as well.
