In the midst of 2020, many of us began to opt for delivery services rather than going to the store or grocery ourselves. As we strive to fulfill our New Year’s resolution of eating healthy this 2021, we can begin by giving patronage to a couple of local initiatives that aim to both provide fresh fruits and vegetables and help farmers struggling in the country.
Session Groceries
After witnessing farmers forced to discard an oversupply of fruits and vegetables, the creators of Session Groceries wanted to lend a helping hand by creating an app that connected farmers in Baguio with customers in Metro Manila. The app, available for both Android and iOS, is a type of online grocery where customers may browse through a number of products available in the comfort of their homes. Fish, meat, fresh vegetables, fruits, and even plants and houseware are all available in the app!
Bukid Fresh
Bukid Fresh started out as a school requirement that bloomed into a fully operating online store, determined to stimulate the country’s agricultural sector. They sell a variety of vegetables, condiments, fruits, and herbs and spices, all packaged in bayongs in an effort to lessen plastic waste. After paying a P50 fee, you may use your bayong for your next coming orders. The store operates through a website and delivers every Saturday.
Good Food Community
With focus on the environment and community, Good Food Community believes in ecological and ethical farming as well as empowering farmers to start farming sustainably. They are partners with farmers across the country and look to shape the way consumers view food. They also let you “gift a farmshare”, allowing you to share healthy, fresh produce with friends and loved ones.
Gising Gising
Gising Gising kickstarted in April 2020 with a mission to fight food insecurity. The company guarantees that for every one box purchased, another is donated to a family in need. Each box includes a mix of fresh fruits or vegetables weighing in at around 6-8kg — that’s good for around 1 week! They deliver every Sunday so make sure to check them out.
Igorot Fresh Produce
Another Benguet-based company, Igorot Fresh Produce also partners with farmers in the community and delivers to areas in Metro Manila, Cavite, and Laguna. The goal is to help sell farmers’ oversupply at a fair price, ensuring that farmers’ livelihoods are secured. They deliver to Metro Manila every Wednesday and Saturday, Cavite on Thursday, and Laguna on Sunday.
