Popular diet trends come and go and as of late, the keto diet has been all the rage. Anyone from your mom to your yoga instructor has been trying out the strict diet in hopes of achieving a slimmer body in the quickest time possible.

But, contrary to what diet blogs and health influencers promise, the keto diet is actually not all that good for you. In fact, it actually tied for last in the 2018 list of best diets from US News and World Report.

The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that essentially forces your body into a state of ketosis. Because of the low intake of carbohydrates, blood sugar levels drop and the body begins to break down fat for energy.

It’s a quick way to lose weight, but in the long run, the effects don’t seem to be so promising.

Firstly, it’s important to note that most of the weight lost through a keto diet is water weight; this means that you’re not losing any fat. You most likely will gain the weight again and it will probably be more than what you lost.

“Keto flu” is also a very possible side effect. This is caused by the process of ketosis and can lead to upset stomach, dizziness, mood swings, and headaches. Because of the intense loss of water in the body, dehydration, fatigue, and muscle cramps can also be expected.

A looming long-term effect of the diet is that it can actually cause damage to the heart and put you at risk for heart disease. Those with kidney and liver issues are also at risk for kidney stones and other complications.

In all actuality, the keto diet is only really recommended for children who suffer from epilepsy, as it has been proven to moderate their symptoms.

For everybody else, the diet is considered unsustainable and unrealistic for individuals looking to lose weight in the long term.

Looking for a better alternative? For healthy and balanced weight loss, try the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on fruits, veggies, and whole grains as well as fish and seafood.

You can also try the vegetarian diet, which is a completely meatless diet that ensures you get all your nutrients from fruits, legumes, and veggies.
