Have you ever thought of what you could do with a banana peel?

5 New Uses for Banana Peels

Surprisingly, you can do a lot! If you didn’t know, 25% of the banana peels we use and throw away end up in landfills, where they emit methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. As such, finding creative ways to use and reuse your peels becomes all the more important.

Luckily, we’ve got some suggestions for you. From plant fertilizer to shoe polisher, here are some uses for your banana peels!

As a plant fertilizer

Use it as compost or “tea” — either way helps your plants grow healthier! Banana peels are filled with nutrients like potassium and phosphorus, which help strengthen your plants’ roots and ward away pests and disease. For compost, just lay the banana peel atop the soil. To make “tea,” place the peel in a jar of water and let it sit for a couple days. When it’s done, mix one part “tea” with five parts water for the ultimate plant booster.

As a polisher

Use your banana peels as shoe polishers. It’s a great all-natural way to get your leather and non-leather footwear looking good as new. Just rub the inside of the peel on your shoes and marvel as the scuff marks disappear. The potassium present in the banana peel is absorbed by the leather, which gets rid of pesky marks. If you find some residue on your shoe, make sure to wipe it off with a clean cloth.

As a defense system for plants

Aside from being a super-effective fertilizer, banana peels also function as aphid deterrents. Dig a shallow hole about 1—2 inches deep near the base of your plants and place the peel inside. Next, lightly cover the peel with dirt so it’s still exposed and voilà! You’ve got yourself an anti-aphid plant. This tip works because aphids and ants dislike the high potassium concentration in banana peels; the banana peel prevents them from settling into your greenery and may even get rid of them for good!

As a skincare item

Okay, here us out — they work as teeth whiteners too. There are of nutrients and antioxidants in banana peels that work great for removing stains on teeth. Start by rubbing the inside of the banana peel directly all over your teeth and letting it sit for 10 minutes. At this point, the banana matter should turn into a sort of paste. Then, take a dry toothbrush and brush it all in before brushing your teeth normally. Repeat this every day for a week or two and check out the results!

As a bug bite solution

Skip the chemicals and go for a banana peel! Many people don’t know that you can actually use banana peels to soothe bug bites. Simply rub the inside of the banana peel against the irritated area and watch it do its magic. Banana peels are full of polysaccharides, which seep into your skin cells and stop swelling and inflammation in minutes.
