As former US president Ronald Reagan once said, “the greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets people to do the greatest things.” While a lot of people are in positions of power, not all of them are true leaders in every sense of the word.

What defines a leader anyway? According to Entrepreneur Magazine, here are seven things great leaders do on a daily basis:

  1. Communicate the state of things. This means you should ensure your team is given updates, allowed to ask questions, and that they have the opportunity to give valuable insights that otherwise would not be obtained. Consistency in success requires for all hands to be on deck, working together and with mutual understanding.
  1. Formulate actionable plans. This process should be formalized, and there needs to be a conclusion as to what embraces the whole of a plan, and what won’t subjugate the plan to unnecessary distraction. Once a plan has been finalized, the leader must then stick by it.
  1. Develop resources. It’s the leader’s job to make sure the team is equipped with all the right tools for them to succeed. These resources range from enlisting the help of experts to the acquisition of material assets.
  1. Help people grow. First and foremost, a leader is a coach. That’s why you need to invest time to get to know your team, and each individual’s strengths and weaknesses. From there, you need to help build them up to their fullest potential.
  1. Trust the process. If you hire smart people and put in the effort to give them space to learn and grow, you will have a capable and driven team. You will need to give them control over operations.
  1. Show appreciation and exude kindness. Solid teams make hard work look easy, but the truth is it’s not. That’s why you need to exude kindness and positivity. Be present and genuine in that which you say.
  1. Look forward. There is always an opportunity to learn everyday, and great leaders always aspire to look forward and do better. They also know that there’s always a next step.

The truth is that while becoming a leader is something a lot of people aspire for, it takes a lot of hard work and effort to be a truly exceptional leader. Encountering roadblocks and making mistakes are inevitable, but good leaders know to equip the team to weather all the storms, and bounce back stronger.
