DIY at Home: Make Your Own Face Mask, Sanitizer, and More

While washing your hands thoroughly is the best way to prevent the spread of many diseases including COVID-19, it definitely won’t hurt to add an extra layer of protection. From face masks to hand sanitizers, here are DIY ideas that you can do to keep the virus at bay even if you are not crafty at all!

Surely, a face mask won’t protect you from getting COVID-19, but it might help prevent you from spreading or contracting the virus if you must leave the house. Follow this step-by-step video to DIY masks using a sewing machine. All you need to do is to cut the fabric using the template provided in the tutorial, sew the top side, pin the elastics for the earloops, sew the sides to secure the elastics, make the pleats, and voila! You now have a washable face mask!

Disinfecting Wipes

Instead of going to the store to buy disinfecting wipes, you can create one by following this YouTube tutorial using common things that can be found at home like paper towels, containers, and bleach. What you need to do is to cut the paper towel roll in two and place it in an airtight container. Then, mix one cup of water with half a teaspoon of bleach and pour the mixture over the paper towel roll. Don’t forget to remove the cardboard piece in the center!

Hand Sanitizer

If you happen to be outside home and don’t have access to soap and water, hand sanitizer is your way to go. Make your own by mixing together rubbing alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, aloe vera gel, and essential oil. Watch this YouTube tutorial for a step-by-step guide on how to create a sanitizer. 

Disinfectant Spray

It’s time for you to experiment with your own spray! Following the World Health Organization’s guideline, here’s how you can create one: Mix  1.5 cups of  Isopropyl alcohol 99.8% with 2 teaspoons of glycerol 98%.  Then, mix a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide 3%, and then add 6 tablespoons distilled water.
