How to Actually Start Saving Money This Year

The hardest part about saving money is often just getting started. If your goal this year is to achieve financial freedom or security, it’s not too late to learn how to actually save money. Whether it’s for short or long-term goals, here are straightforward and realistic tips to help you stay on top of your finances.

Have a Budget Tracker

Keep track of all your expenses like bills, groceries, and online shopping purchases. Create a sheet on Excel or find a budget tracking app to make things easier for you and sort your information into categories. Review where you might be overspending and consider cutting back on unnecessary expenses.

Automate Bank Transfers

Spending less than you earn is a great way to save money. If you haven’t already been doing this, set up automatic bank transfers from your payroll account to a savings account as soon as you get your paycheck. Better yet, invest your money or allocate it to a high-interest savings account. This way, you aren’t tempted to spend all your income in one go. As the saying goes, out of sight, out of mind.

Set Short and Long-Term Financial Goals

Setting a goal is one of the most effective strategies to save money. Regardless of whether you’re planning a vacation, saving money for a home, or preparing for retirement, create a plan to help you reach your goal. Calculate how much money you’ll need to put away and how long you intend to save for it. Future you will be grateful for the reward.

Differentiate Needs from Wants

When you’re on a budget, only spend what is essential and set a portion of your earnings after payday. Of course, you deserve to treat yourself now and then, but do you really need a new phone each year? Determine which non-essentials, such as entertainment and dining out, you can make do without for the time being.
