As of February 2021, more than 4.2 million Filipinos have been reported as jobless due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic according to CNN Philippines. In line with this, a lot of people have been hustling extra hard to find new employment opportunities.

While it can be discouraging to get rejected or to not be considered by a company, to begin with, there are ways for you to improve your chances and actually get hired. According to Harvard Business Review, here are some tips to give you a better shot of finding a job:

  1. Accept that your “dream job” doesn’t exist. First of all, you have to accept the fact that there’s no such thing as a perfect job. Think of the job-hunting process as a funnel. The wide opening at the top symbolizes everything you have to do in line with your search, which includes networking, finding openings, and submitting applications. These activities will trickle down to three to four interviews, and then funnel down into one or two job offers. 
  2. Read the job description with a grain of salt. The fact of the matter is that not all job descriptions are accurate. That’s why you should treat them as a guide instead. Compare your prior experience and knowledge to the skills required of the job, and apply if you’re qualified for 75% of those requirements. Managers want to hire people who are excited and willing to learn anyway.
  3. Look beyond what’s available on the job market. Not all online job listings are correct. There are times wherein an internal candidate has already been promised the job and external candidates may not be considered. That’s why you should check the company website to see if the position is still open, as well as verify the job opening’s date of posting. 
  1. Always tailor your resume. Research shows that recruiters spend about seven seconds checking your resume before they pursue or throw it away. That’s why you should make every application count by tailor fitting it to the role and company you’re applying for. 
  2. Don’t forget your cover letter. You should write a cover letter that reflects your unique personality. It should also explain how your skills are relevant to the position you’re applying for, as well as the specific outcomes of previous work you’ve done. 

Job hunting is difficult, especially amid the ongoing pandemic. That’s why you should prepare as much as you can, and explore as many options as possible. At the end of the day, it’s important for you to just trust the process, and remember that whatever’s meant for you will be.
