Tennis prodigy Alex Eala has gathered some much-needed momentum as she wins her maiden match in the Wimbledon Championships in London on Monday, July 5.

The 16-year-old netter defeated in dominant fashion the 17-year-old Argentinian Solana Sierra. 6-2, 6-4, in the opening round of the Wimbledon girls’ singles tournament at Court 6 of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Eala sailed through the first set that saw her extend a 3-1 lead to 5-1. Come the second set, Eala reached a repeat of her first frame’s 3-1 lead but had to dig deeper following a hard-fought fifth game that went to Sierra, cutting the lead to 3-2. Eala quickly countered with a break at deuce which brought the match to 5-3, but not before Sierra logged back-to-back points herself. After a winning forehand, Eala took the second set and sealed the victory after 41 minutes in the latter half.

Eala, the No. 2 seed in the tournament and juniors No. 3, is set to take on juniors No. 30 Spain’s Mintegi Del Olmo in the second round.

The Filipina tennis wunderkind has set her sights on capturing her third Grand Slam title following her fresh tournament win in last June’s 2021 French Open girls doubles tilt.

A Rafael Nadal Academy Scholar, Eala is currently the Asian female junior No. 1 and the WTA World No. 629. She also made history during last year’s French Open where she became the first Filipino in 35 years to make the last four of a Grand Slam juniors singles event.

Congratulations, Alex!
