The first half of 2021 was ripe with exciting new anime films. Movies like Belle and Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop received rave reviews, while others like Gintama: The Final and My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission had anime fans screaming for more.

Kurayukaba

Kurayukaba is the steampunk lover’s ultimate fantasy as an entire underground town struggles to decode the mystery of falling shadows and strange mass disappearances. Tanne and her armored train are at the forefront of the investigation to find out the truth behind the chaos. You can catch the crowdfunded film on August 13, 2021.

The House of the Lost on the Cape

Adapted from the prize-winning novel of the same name, The House of the Lost on the Cape follows the lives of three women who find solace in an abandoned house after the 2011 Tohaku earthquake and tsunami. The film is part of a special project meant to commemorate the 10th anniversary since the disaster; viewers can expect it to be released on August 27th, 2021.

Free! The Final Stroke

A continuation of the Free! anime’s third season, Free! The Final Stroke comes after protagonists Haruka Nanase and Rin Matsuoka compete in the All-Japan invitational for a chance to swim at the global swimming competition. While not much has been said about the film’s plot, it’s sure that audiences will see a lot of competitive swimming and talented swimmers. Mark your calendars for September 17, 2021 for this film!

Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night

SAO fans will be delighted to know that the original series will be retold in a fresh, new way through the Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night movie! The film covers the Aincrad arc and is based on the Sword Art Online: Progressive light novels. Check out the film on October 30, 2021.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie

The immensely popular Jujutsu Kaisen series is getting a movie! Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie revolves around a new character haunted by a ghost of his past. He’s eventually offered a chance at Jujutsu High, where he’ll meet some familiar faces. The film works as a prequel to the main series and will be considered as canon, so Jujutsu fans shouldn’t miss out. The release date is set for December 24, 2021.
