Galentine’s Day sounds like a made-up holiday (and that’s because it kind of is), but it really is an event that some people commemorate. The term was coined in an episode of the mockumentary series, Parks and Recreation, to celebrate female friendship on the day before Valentine’s. Instead of sulking about how you don’t have a date this weekend, hit up your girls and show them some love.
The episode that started it all aired back in 2010 and has made the event mainstream since then. In the words of Leslie Knope, “Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies.” Because of the pandemic, it still isn’t advisable to have a gathering but there may be alternatives.
Because of quarantine restrictions, we’ve adapted the way we socialize and have gone virtual for the most part. Send your friends an e-vite so you can all block out a time to catch up. With everything that’s been going on, it might have been a while since you’ve seen them or even talked to them. Go all out and even set a theme where you get dolled up.
Fans of the show are aware of how much Leslie loves breakfast foods — specifically waffles. Have everyone order in their favorite breakfast items or feel free to order what you and your friends enjoy. Maybe you’d rather have a virtual wine night with the ladies. That sounds fun, too.
Sometimes all a person needs are kind words to lift their spirits. Let them know you thought of them and shoot them a message telling them how wonderful they are and how much you appreciate them. One of Leslie’s relatable quotes goes, “We need to remember what’s important: Friends, Waffles, Work. Or Waffles, Friends, Work. Doesn’t matter, but work is third.”
Although your love for your gal pals shouldn’t be limited to this one day of the year, it’s still nice to have one dedicated to celebrating your friendship.
