Five Things You Need To Know About Viral AI Chatbot ChatGPT

AI startup co-founded by Elon Musk developed the trending chatbot

From poetry in the style of William Shakespeare to advice on what to do for a child’s birthday party, trending chatbot, ChatGPT has that eerily covered.

But before diving head-on into this new tech craze that allows for human-like responses to almost every question, it’s always best to familiarize oneself with it first.

1. AI powers ChatGPT

ChatGPT is actually an Artificial Intelligence-powered chatbot developed by San Francisco-based startup OpenAI.

Twitter’s Elon Musk and Sam Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with well-known investors as backers — most notably Microsoft. Based on the GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) language model that uses deep learning techniques, ChatGPT generates human-like responses to text inputs based on a large amount of data.

2. Its use cuts across different sectors

In terms of applications, ChatGPT may be useful in various industries, such as customer service, education, and entertainment. Its potential applications range from school homework to legal briefs.

But what amazes many these days is how it can be used to generate text-based outputs based on given inputs. The said feature makes ChatGPT ideal for various tasks such as language translation, text summarization, and answering questions.

In addition, ChatGPT can also be useful in the field of content creation as it can generate articles, stories, and poems, among others. Since it is trained to handle large amounts of information, the chatbot can likewise be an asset when it comes to data analysis and research to extract insights and trends.

3. It is popular because it’s accessible

One reason for ChatGPT’s popularity is its accessibility. At the moment, the service is public to anyone via the OpenAI website.

It only took ChatGPT just five days to reach one million users. By January 2023, ChatGPT has already amassed 100 million monthly active users only two months into its launch, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. Recall that it took TikTok nine months to reach 100 million users and Instagram two and a half years.

4. ChatGPT has its limitations

Despite its innovativeness, responses from the chatbot can contain factual inaccuracies.

ChatGPT’s knowledge is still limited to 2021 data, but may improve with time. Going forward, the expectation is that ChatGPT will be the precursor to much more advanced AI systems.

For now, experts say generative AI like ChatGPT isn’t yet capable of achieving human-like, “general” intelligence.

5. It poses various legal and security risks and issues

Unfortunately, the important industry players and public aren’t the only parties that can benefit from ChatGPT and similar AI models’ accessibility – cybercriminals can, too.

Since ChatGPT is excellent at imitating human writing, it has the potential to be a powerful phishing and social engineering tool. Using the said technology, non-native speakers will be able to craft a phishing email with perfect spelling and grammar. It can also make it much easier for all perpetrators to emulate the tone, word selection, and style of writing of their intended target – which will make it harder than ever for recipients to distinguish between a legitimate and fraudulent email.
