Cork — The More Sustainable Option to Yoga Mats

Cork — The More Sustainable Option to Yoga Mats

When we work out on our yoga mats, we don’t really think about materials that go into them. However, we should be more mindful about this because one of the most common materials for yoga mats is PVC, the most environmentally damaging plastic according to Greenpeace. Even the World Health Organization has something to say about it because they tagged the chemical used to make PVC, vinyl chloride, as a carcinogen. So aside from environmental problems, PVC can also result in health problems.

If you want to avoid toxic or chemical-free yoga mats, then cork can be your answer. Cork is also the sustainable option because it is biodegradable and renewable.

Cork has other benefits as well. It is waterproof so you don’t have to worry about your mat retaining water, and it is antibacterial so you don’t have to worry about it smelling after you sweat on it.

It also provides a solid grip so if you’ve been slipping on your yoga mat during your downward dog poses, then you should definitely think about switching to cork!

Since the material isn’t widely used, you can’t just go into a sporting goods store to buy a cork yoga mat. But here are the available cork yoga mats in the Philippines:

Loop.

Loop. is an online store that sells all things sustainable and that includes the cork yoga mat. They even collaborated with Save Philippine Seas for a special design. For their original line of yoga mats, you can check them out here.

Chris Sports

If you want to check the item out before buying, Chris Sports has the cork yoga mat in its offerings. You can call their branches for availability.

Shopee

Another yoga mat that can be delivered right to your doorstep. This one’s thinner than the others but it still serves its purpose of being nonslip!
