With the rise of the #AdoptDontShop movement, we often see images of neglected and abused animals on our feeds looking extremely sad and sickly. Their heartbreaking stories make us want to open up our homes and take care of each and every one of them.

How You Can Rescue an Animal

Of course, our situations can’t exactly accommodate that. Financial constraints, consideration for household members, and work commitments make it hard for us to fully give ourselves to the cause. After all, taking an animal in is a 12 to 15-year commitment. It’s no walk in the park.

However, there are other options available for those wanting to help. If you want to rescue an animal without having to physically go out on the streets, have a look at a couple things you can do from home.

Foster

Fostering is not talked about enough. When you become a foster parent, you are essentially taking care of an animal for a specific amount of time until an adopter has been found. Some foster animals can be special needs, with medical or behavioral issues that you can help them work around.

Some organizations even pay for the foster animal’s needs while they look for potential adopters.

This option is great for those who have the extra time, space, and money to spare without having to commit an entire lifetime to owning a pet. When you foster, you open a space in the shelter for another animal to be rescued, so you’re saving two lives!

Sponsor

Sponsoring is like fostering, but from a distance. Sponsoring a specific animal from a pound or shelter means you will give a monthly payment that will cover their day-to-day needs. This can mean food, vet bills, and medicines — all the things necessary for the animal to live.

Organizations will often let you choose which animal you’d like to sponsor; you’ll be able to browse available pets on their websites.

This is a great way for those with the money, but not the time, to help out animals as well as shelters that are often burdened with mounting bills. Sponsoring an animal can really lift a load off these shelters’ shoulders, allowing them to allocate more resources for rescuing and rehabilitating.

Donate

There’s no shame in not being able to play a bigger part in the rescue scene, because donating actually helps organizations keep going.

You can offer donations once, or monthly, and for vet bills, maintenance bills, medicines, rescue ops — it’s really up to you!

You have a direct say in where your money goes, and you can rest assured knowing that your contribution is going to a good place. Just know that giving donations allows the organization to keep rescuing, operating, and rehoming.

Share

And if you don’t have much to give, the best thing you can offer is your passion and love for these animals.

Simply sharing a post or educating fellow friends and family can make so much of a difference for organizations fighting to save animals.

A click of a button goes a long way, so don’t forget to share the advocacy! Someone somewhere out there will see it.

It’s important to note that these options aren’t exclusive to organizations in the Philippines. There are tons of rescues abroad that allow you to sponsor, donate, or share their cause.
