It’s time to grow your own vegetables in your backyard

Life during this pandemic shouldn’t be all bad. If you’ve already tried all the cooking, sewing, and dancing clips at TikTok, maybe it’s now time to try gardening. And what better vegetables to plant than things you can actually eat!

composting

Urban farming has been a major topic since the start of the shortage of vegetable supplies this year. Not only does it give you a sustainable source of food, it can also help you save much needed funds. Therefore, it has been one of the campaigns that local government units promote.

So, what exactly is Urban Farming you ask? Well, simply put, it is farming in the city. Typically, places where there’s limited land to plant on. It’s like a mini version of a backyard garden because the plants are actually planted in small containers instead of a plot of land. You may not be able to go out like you used to, but there may be a way to bring you closer to nature!

Here are the steps on how to start your journey on urban farming:

Look around you. Your house may be filled with what you think of as garbage, but these things can actually be used for nutritious vegetables to grow in. Used PET bottles, old biscuit cans, or literally any material that can hold soil could be used as the container of your soon-to-be dinner. Don’t throw away your ice cream and milk cartons!

Learn to compost. Compost allows you to introduce necessary microorganisms that will support plant growth. This will improve the quality of your soil, giving you better tasting, better quality vegetables. So save those coffee grounds and eggshells you used for breakfast and add it in a compost pot.

Prepare your “farm”. Make sure that your “farms” are in a good spot with enough sunlight and proper drainage. We wouldn’t want our balconies and rooftops to be damp and wet. Check if you have a source of good soil nearby. If not, you can start adding your compost ahead of time to improve the quality of soil you have. Also, don’t forget to add potholes to your makeshift pots. You can opt for raised vertical towers from Down To Earth or other raised farm options if you do not have space.

Start planting. Whether it be ginger, onions, or garlic, you can plant anything you want in your urban farm. There’s definitely no better teacher than your own experience. For starters you may want to try bell peppers, arugula, lettuce and tomatoes. You just need to be patient with your plants and they’ll supply you with your salad ingredients, FOR FREE!

With the times being as hard as it is, wouldn’t it be nice to know that you won’t have to worry whether you have something to eat for the day? You can go to your “farm” and pick out whatever you want to eat, just like your own mini-grocery store! To top it all off, you’d also be helping the environment. The city isn’t always the cleanest place to live. But, with the vegetables that you’d plant, you’d be adding plants that would purify the air around you. There’s literally no downsides in trying out urban farming!
