Lana Condor Shares How Hollywood Success Affected Her Mental Health

Lana Condor, most notably known for playing the role of the sweet and bright-eyed Lara Jean Covey in the “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” movie series, radiates the same friendly and sunny vibe of this very lovable character.

But beyond the bright smiles she’s kept for the cameras in interviews, promotions, and shoots, she reached a point when juggling too many things at the same time started to weigh her down.

Taking every opportunity

In an interview with Self Magazine, Lana shares how she found it difficult to say “no” to the many opportunities that came along her way, leading to burnout.

According to Lana, the first “To All the Boys” movie was “received way better than I had ever imagined in my wildest dreams. It changed much of my life very quickly… And then I was shooting this television show that was really dark.”

Being busy all the time eventually led to moments when she couldn’t even speak, eat, or sleep: “I was just saying yes to everything because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and you want to feel like you’re fully embracing everything. But I’ve never felt more horrible mentally.”

She’s also opened up on Instagram about the “up and down emotions” she’s been feeling and noted how the little things she found beauty in brightened up her days.

Strength in vulnerability

It was the love from her support system and opening up about her feelings that helped her recover from the burnout she experienced.

“I was on the phone with my team and I had this moment where I just was in tears, telling them that I don’t feel okay. And they were all shocked because I wasn’t open about my feelings… My mom and my dad are [also] so supportive… [They] have been a great sounding board.”

Aside from the support she’s gotten from her team and family, it was also the realization that there is strength in being vulnerable that helped her cope.

“I’m realizing now, particularly this year, that there’s a lot of strength in showing people that everything is not always daisies every single minute of every single day,” Lana said.

Smaller world

Moving to a different city made her world “smaller” and gave her the chance to explore other things she enjoys in life, such as songwriting and singing with her boyfriend, Anthony De La Torre.

Aside from making music with Anthony, spending time with her dog Emmy, reading books, and cooking are some things she got the chance to do and appreciate since she decided to move to Seattle from Los Angeles.

“Life is slower where I’m living now, and I have never felt happier, because I feel fuller,” she said.
