Road to a Zero Waste Lifestyle: Sustainable alternatives for things you use every day

The world has enough problems so let’s try not to add more plastic waste to it. If we consume consciously, the things we use every day won’t end up in the ocean or a landfill somewhere. Everything’s disposable these days but there are sustainable items that are biodegradable or at least will last us for years. While not everyone can live the zero waste lifestyle because options are limited and usual stores simply do not offer package free choices, we can start with simple everyday items.

Not sure where to start? Here are some sustainable alternatives for things we use every day:

All-Around Soap Bar

If you think about it, there’s a lot going on in our bathroom because we use more than one product when we shower. The container our shampoos and soap gels come in are usually made of plastic, and we simply dispose of them when we need new ones. If you want to reduce the plastic waste born out of your daily showers, there’s an all-around soap bar that you can use for your skin and body.

Bamboo Toothbrushes

For oral hygiene, the popular choice in stores and groceries are toothbrushes made of plastic. We change toothbrushes about four times a year so this is already a lot considering these plastics don’t just disappear. As a replacement for your plastic toothbrushes, try bamboo toothbrushes. There’s also the charcoal floss if you’re looking for alternatives to that.

Tooth Powder

Another oral hygiene product that generates a lot of waste is toothpaste, be it in the form of tubes or sachets. For your toothpaste substitute, there’s the tooth powder made of natural ingredients.

Menstrual Cup

Sanitary napkins take over 500 years to decompose. Centuries after we’re gone, our used pads will still be dumped somewhere. Since women menstruate a couple of days a month for about 40 years, just imagine the waste just for one person. For a more sustainable option, there are menstrual cups that can be used for up to two years. If you’re a bit hesitant to use the menstrual cup, there are washable cloth pads

COVID-19 Essentials

These days, the face shield and the face mask are part of our everyday lives. These can have devastating effects on the environment when not disposed of properly and as early as now, face masks are washing up on shorelines. Sustainable alternatives for your COVID-19 essentials are the Abaca Fiber Mask (PHP 199) and the Bamboo-Framed Face Shield (PHP 199).
