LTO To Unveil Digital Driver’s License Soon

Hopefully, the digital licenses get integrated into iOS and Android wallets

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) plans to launch “digital drivers’ licenses” to address the shortage of plastic cards. The electronic license will replace the temporary driver’s license printed on the back of the official receipt.

LTO chief Jose Arturo Tugade said the electronic version is for registration renewals and other agency transactions. It can also be presented to law enforcement officers during apprehension.

He assured the public that the digital license’s security features would integrate into the super app’s security measures.

Chief Tugade also noted the super app’s similarity to a wallet containing all government IDs within a mobile device.

The agency has also extended the validity of driver’s licenses. Those expiring on April 24 or later are no longer required to renew their licenses until October 31.

The plastic cards shortage currently affects around 5.2 million license holders.

Tugade revealed that the LTO monitored the plastic card inventory’s critical level as early as November 2022.

Still, the DOTr directed the agency to defer any procurement worth P50 million and above to the DOTr central office.

“Had we been able to continue with our procurement activities, we would have sufficient plastic cards right now,” he said.

Yet, the DOTr directed the LTO to defer any procurement worth P50 million and above to the DOTr central office in January. Tugade said if procurement activities continued, enough plastic cards would be available now.

The LTO also reported a need for license plates for motorcycles and motor vehicles. There are only about a million license plates left for motorcycles and 300,000 for motor vehicles.
