The competition in the much-awaited Miss Universe 2020 is heating up, with contestants now hard-pressed to present their best faces to their fans, particularly to Filipinos.

That includes Miss Universe Brazil 2020 Julia Gama who, upon arriving at the event’s venue at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino Guitar Hotel, set herself apart by wearing lush green prints and greeting Filipino admirers in the local language.

She even posted her spiel on her Instagram account, making it clear in the caption that she practiced to “get it right.”

Mabuhay Pilipinas! Kumusta? Ako po si Julia Gama, ang Miss Universe ng Brazil. Maraming salamat sa lahat ng suporta. Mahal ko kayo!” the Brazilian contender spoke with confidence and grace.

As the pageant stage gears for an international premiere next Sunday, more and more candidates – and even the Miss Universe Organization itself – are showing their affinity for all things Filipino. It was back in April when Jojo Bragais’ brand was chosen as the pageant’s “shoe sponsor.”

Then, just this month, posts made rounds that Miss Universe Cameroon Angele Kossinda’s gowns were designed by a 20-year-old Filipino fashion student, and that Miss Universe Canada Nova Stevens and Miss Universe Romania Bianca Tirsin will both be strutting the runway wearing Michael Cinco gowns.

The contest, however, has also brought out the bad side of the Filipino audience. Speaking of Stevens, she was the unwanted target of racist slurs by Filipinos online who mocked her skin color earlier this month.

With a mounting audience coming from various ethnicities, Miss Universe Canada’s message of love is one that we should remember as the contest date draws nearer: to “see the beauty in this world” and to “cheer for your girls with love and respect.”
