The initial field of 100 females will be narrowed down to 30 come the coronation night this September.

On Monday, social media was shaken by the Miss Universe Philippines (MUP) Organization’s announcement of the Top 100 delegates for this year’s prestigious pageant. In a Facebook post, MUP unveiled its initial list of ladies who made it to the top 100 in no particular order.

“Exciting times ahead, Universe!” its first caption read.

Among the amazing crop of women on the list, a few names stood out as either pageant veterans or early fan favorites. Familiar faces like those of Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2012 and Miss Supranational 2018 1st runner-up Katrina Jayne Dimaranan, Miss Globe 2019 second runner-up Leren Mae Bautista, all caught the attention of pageant aficionados, while actress and “Pinoy Big Brother” alumna Kisses Delavin and “Asia’s Next Top Model” 2017 winner Maureen Wroblewitz emerged as strong candidates for the crown.

Clamor among social media users was also loud around Morena beauty and TikTok star Ayn Bernos as well as Filipina-Ghanaian Afia Yeboah, who made headlines in 2019 when she hitched on a motorcycle fully dressed to make it on time to her oath-taking ceremony as a newly-minted geodetic engineer.

Meanwhile, in her latest Instagram post, Maureen Wroblewitz apologized for staying mum about her motive to join the prestigious pageant.

“Surprise! I apologize for the white lies. As difficult as it was, I had to keep this a secret,” she wrote. “This is the new chapter I’ve talked about in a recent post and I humbly ask for your continued support.”

This year, the candidates are subject to a new set of mechanics. According to Voltaire Tayag, director of communications for the Miss Universe Philippines, all 100 aspirants will be made to undergo a series of remote challenges between July 19 to August 30 which they will have to fulfill virtually to limit their urgency to travel amid a pandemic. After this stage, they will then be cut down to 75, and then 50, a selection to be determined by online fan votes and judges’ scores.

The Top 50 will then head to Manila for a series of in-person interviews to be held on August 28, which will trim their number down to 30. This will set the field of official candidates who will vie for the crown on coronation night this September 25.

The emerging winner will succeed reigning Miss Universe Philippines Rabiya Mateo. She will also carry the Philippine flag in the 70th Miss Universe pageant in December in Eliat, Israel, where she will try to capture the country’s fifth Miss Universe crown.
