Something big is happening to Netflix soon. The content streaming giant recently announced that it would include video games into its library, according to Rappler.com. This is in line with the company’s projection of weak subscriber growth amid the intense competition in the content streaming world. Plus, pandemic restrictions are being lifted around the world, which means more people will stay at home less.

To put things into perspective, Netflix is currently weathering a sharp decline in new subscribers after a massive explosion in 2020. This was fueled by stay-at-home orders to curb the COVID-19 pandemic around the world. In the US and Canada, Netflix reported a loss of approximately 430,000 subscribers in the second quarter of the year. This is only the third time the company has experienced a decline in 10 years.

To help the company stand out among the competition, Netflix is working on expanding its video game offerings, which would be available to subscribers at no extra charge. Sounds awesome, right?

“We view gaming as another new content category for us, similar to our expansion into original films, animation and unscripted TV,” the company said in a statement.

However, don’t expect that Netflix will suddenly be filled with video games this year. This move to acquiring more video games is said to be a multi-year effort, and Netflix is looking to start things a bit slow. Netflix has dabbled in video games with a few titles linked to series including Stranger Things and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
So in a way, the rise of other streaming services has panned out well for the general public. After all, Netflix is stepping up its game in terms of product offerings. Plus, a lot of popular Netflix originals such as new seasons of You, Money Heist and Witcher are slated for the second half of the year. Doesn’t this excite you to Netflix and chill?
