Filipino nurses are getting tired. As reported by ABS-CBN News, the Philippine Nurses Association said that while the ongoing inoculation of the COVID-19 vaccines lessens the fear of contracting the virus, they said that there is “no antidote” to being tired as virus cases surged nationwide.

According to the Philippine Nurses Association president Melbert Reyes, nurses’ workload increase whenever a colleague of theirs is quarantined after being exposed to the virus. “Sobrang hirap po ng sitwasyon natin ngayon kasi even our nurses are being infected by COVID-19… Very alarming po ‘yan at nakakatakot po ‘yan para sa ating healthcare system (It’s very difficult now because even our nurses are being infected by COVID-19… This is very alarming and scary for our healthcare system),” he explained. He also remarked that working in the COVID ward can be very tiring.

The Filipino Nurses United (FNU) also expressed their alarm as 36% or 14,963 of their members have contracted the COVID-19 virus. The group has 5,355 members. With health care facilities at 60-80 percent capacity, nurses are exhausted and demoralized with continuous work, said the FNU.

According to Reyes, however, so far, there is no shortage of nurses in the country. There is only maldistribution. Reyes also commented how it would be better if the government could entice people to go back to the nursing field. The government had placed a limit of 5,000 on the deployment of health workers overseas to avoid a supposed shortage in the event the pandemic worsens. To put things into perspective, on March 22, the Department of Health reported that there are 8,019 new COVID-19 cases in the country. Since March 19, there have been more than 7,000 new cases in the country. With the surge of COVID-19 cases nationwide, who wouldn’t be exhausted, right?
